A bespoke system instead of an expensive modification

When an existing supplier quoted more than £15,000 to modify a system, a new bespoke system was built instead, with more functionality and more control.

Selected experience from a project delivered before Process Wranglers was founded. The organisation is not named and was not a Process Wranglers client.

The process, marked up

The decision

  1. Pay the existing supplier to modify their system (not chosen)
  2. Build a new bespoke system with room to grow (part of the solution)

The supplier quotation is a cost that was not taken up. It isn't directly comparable with the full lifetime cost of the new system.

What was happening

An existing web management system needed changes, and the incumbent supplier proposed more than £15,000 to make them.

What needed to change

The required changes, and the ability to shape the system further in future without depending on one supplier.

What was done

Mike was involved in designing and building the replacement bespoke system.

Why that approach

Building new provided the requested changes plus functionality beyond them, and gave the organisation greater control over future development.

The outcome

Functionality beyond the changes that had been quoted for.

Greater control over future development.
